Math Teaching Tips and Tricks
Tip #1
Use a form of daily spiral review. This may be 3-5 quick questions that students answer each morning, or it may be a weekly homework assignment, but daily review is necessary for students to retain skills throughout the year. Check out my Shop page to visit my TPT store where I have included digital math quick checks for all the 5th grade math standards.
Tip #2
Assign homework that works for your students. Sometimes a weekly assignment fits the needs of you and your students. Other times, a nightly assignment is necessary to keep students on track. Pick what works for your students, their home situation, and make sure you have time to review or grade the assignments with the students.
Tip #3
Data is important in gauging student understanding of skills and determining the necessary interventions. But don't rely fully on the data. Students will often have an off day when taking a test, or may have issues outside of school that impact their academic performance. You know your students best, so make the best decisions for your students.
Tip #4
Don't compare yourself or your teaching to other teachers. Don't get me wrong! We can all learn from each other and it is important to share ideas with fellow colleagues, but don't get caught up in the teacher next door who has increased test scores for all her students or the teacher down the hall who is always playing games and redesigning her room. Do the best you can with what you have and always work to be your best, not a version of the colleague you wish you were like.
