Daily Reading Warm Ups and a Free Download

You've heard of number talks, right? The craze of discussing numbers, operations, and number sense on a daily basis has taken over our mathematics instruction. But what about Daily ELA Talks?? Daily Reading Warm Ups provide a way to discuss ELA topics on a daily basis with students. You can dive into deeper discussions around reading skills, vocabulary, spelling, language skills, and so much more!

I have heard so many teachers say they are looking for a simple way to engage students in a daily reading review, but are so short on time. Many review activities for ELA involve lengthy passages, difficult questions, and the need to write out responses. These Daily Reading Warm Ups for literature and non-fiction topics cover most ELA topics for grades 4 through 6.

Topics Included:

  • Theme

  • Main Idea

  • Genre

  • Story Elements

  • Author's Purpose

  • Point of View

  • Text Structures

  • Text Features

  • Vocabulary

  • Grammar (Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives)

  • Spelling, Punctuation, Capitalization

  • Greek and Latin Root Words

  • Figurative Language

  • And So Much More!

These 180 warm up activities are the perfect way to review skills you have already taught and to preview new skills that your students will be learning soon. Spiral review of ELA topics can really enhance your students understanding of these skills and allows you to build upon their knowledge of reading and writing skills on a daily basis.

I use these Daily Reading Warm Up activities in the first 5 minutes of my reading block each day. I display the new passage or question on the front board and have my students spend a minute or two thinking quietly to themselves. Then, I ask students who are ready to share their thoughts or answer to the problem. I always follow up with the question "why?" I want students to not only give an answer, but to be able to explain the reasons behind their answer or their thought process to get there.

Just as number talks promote deeper thinking and problem solving in the math classroom, daily ELA discussions provide the same for your reading and writing instruction. You will also be able to collect quick data on your students understanding of a variety of skills to inform your instruction.

The resource includes teacher directions, a reference sheet of ELA topics, and a digital Google Slides version of all 180 days of reading warm up activities.
